Municipality of Hódmezővásárhely (Hungary) - Lead Partner

Population: 47.000 inhabitants
Area: 483 km2

Arms of Hódmezővásárhely

The medieval town of Hódmezővásárhely is situated in South-East Hungary, in the region of the Great Plain. It has the second largest administrative area in the country with significant economic, cultural, artistic and educational facilities making the city one of the most dynamically improving settlements of the South Great Plain Region.

The town’s historical and economical development is tightly linked to agriculture which still plays an important role in the region. Tourism, based on the region’s thermal facilities attracts numbers of visitors. Despite its relatively small size, the city is a core artistic and cultural centre of the Great Plain region, especially due to its rich tradition of ceramics. Guided by a 7.000 years old culture, the city has developed as a major ceramics centre in Central Europe and has accommodated the famous majolica factory for a hundred years. The city hosts numerous historic edifices, museums and public buildings knowing an increasing number of visitors thanks to the program “Culture for every day”.

The city’s successful performance in the field of lower energy consumption has gained national recognition and strategic importance. Hódmezővásárhely has very good assets for the use of renewable, green energies, i.e. thermal resources, which are used for the heating of 80% of the residential housing park. However, more emphasis is needed on improvement of energy efficiency in public buildings including measuring and monitoring of energy use. Tackling the issue of efficient use of energy from a transnational angle, the city wished to deepen cooperation with municipalities and sectorial organizations in the Central European region, targeting concrete efficiency enhancement goals to be reached over the next decade. Its cooperation network is focused on the creation of a joint strategy, based on various stakeholders’ experience and know-how, preparing future endeavours and actions at regional/local level. Besides GovernEE, Hódmezővásárhely has been both a lead and a cooperating partner in several interregional (INTERREG IVC, URBACTII) projects since Hungary’s accession to the EU.
